1.Preventative eye care is much better than reactive treatment

We all know that vision is important, but most people fail to understand that preventative vision deterioration measures can and should be taken as opposed to trying to fix eye problems after the damage is done.

When dealing with an organ as sensitive as the eye, preventive eye care is always better than remedial eye measures as you are far less likely to achieve the same effectiveness as prevention would have.

2.Regularly get your eyes checked by a professional

Proper and timely eye care can slow macular degeneration, which is a harmful consequence of the natural process of aging.  A simple habit of visiting the doctor periodically for a check up of the eyes helps significantly in preventing eye problems.

3.Nutrition and eye care is closely interrelated

Good food rich in vitamin A, E, C, Zinc and B12 will protect you from eye problems. In this regard, it is pertinent to remember that:

  • Carrot is a rich source of vitamin A.
  • Spinach is a rich source of vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant. It slows the onset of macular degeneration and deterioration of eyesight.
  • Vitamin E and vitamin C strengthens connective tissues in the eye and thereby contributes to the eye health.
  • Zinc and other such minerals are good for the eye. Omega-3 fatty acid, which is present in fish oil and flaxseed oil, reduces macular degeneration of nerve cells. It too contributes to ocular health.
  • Red blood cells are vital for the eyes as it ensures proper functioning of the brain and the nervous system. Vitamin B-12 is beneficial in this regard.

4.Exercise the eye

Just as physical exercises for the body keeps it fit and healthy, exercises for the eye improves overall eye health and eyesight.  Regular exercises for the eye are a must.

  • Strengthen eye muscles by alternatively concentrating on a tip of pencil placed a foot away and another farther object using just one eye.
  • Deliberately blink 15 times in a minute to keep your eye clean, lubricated and tension free.
  • Cure tunnel vision by training the mind to be aware of the complete scene. This helps in increasing awareness of peripheral images.
  • Rapidly flutter blink for at least 25 times in a day.

5.Modify your lifestyle and daily habits

Taking steps to ensure your vision is in good condition for as long as possible often requires changes to your lifestyle and daily habits.

  • Protect your eyes from Ultra Violet (UV) rays.  UV rays are all around us, so keep your sunglasses handy, even during the cold months. UV rays can damage your eyes even when it’s not summer.  Fit your computer monitor with a UV filter. Use proper safety goggles if your job exposes you to UV lights.
  • Eat eye-friendly food rich in antioxidants like spinach, broccoli, peas and tangerines.
  • Give your eyes a break if you spend long periods of time in front of the computer or television. Staring at the screen can strain your eyes. Take frequent breaks and keep your eyes moist by consciously blinking or using artificial tears.
  • Quit smoking. According to research, smoking contributes to the onset of cataracts, macular degeneration, and dry eyes.

6.Be extra vigilant if your family has a predisposition to eye issues

If you have a family history of eye disease, ask your optometrist for an appropriate eye exam for you. Early detection is key to preventing vision loss.

7.Diagnose and treat any vision deterioration as soon as possible

Getting the right diagnosis and treatment of eye disease at the earliest point of deterioration will ensure that your eyes will have the best vision and functionality that’s possible after treatment.
