Drugs that are clinically tested to create a risk to a person and the society if abused are provided strict administration for distribution by the law. These substances can be accessible only through a doctor’s prescription. The five classes of drugs that are prescribed under proper dosages are depressants, anabolic steroids, stimulants, hallucinogens and narcotics which are known to be potentially addictive.

There are also certain kinds of drugs that are prohibited by the law as there is no sufficient clinical evidence of their medical use. These drugs include lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), heroin and other hallucinogens. Drugs that are proposed for medical purposes and are highly addictive may belong to the class of narcotics, depressants and stimulants.

Narcotics primarily include pain relievers such as opiates, morphine and methadone. These drugs are prescribed by doctors to patients with moderate to severe discomforts. Many medical experts of drug abuse are giving the dose to patients based on the results of the initial examination during consultation. Due to the potential risk that they may pose to patients taking the medications are strictly supervised by medical professionals. The distribution of these drugs is also heavily regulated by the law.

Depressants like benzodiazepines and barbiturates may create various effects on the central nervous system. These drugs can benefit patients with severe depressive and anxiety disorders but can be very dangerous if abused.

Many people are using stimulant drugs for many reasons including treating narcolepsy, attention deficit disorder and weight loss. Under this class are amphetamines which are prescribed for medical reasons but are often abused by many patients. Like the other classes, these medicines are also controlled because of their addicted properties. According to experts of drug addiction recovery programs many people who are taking these medications can experience the state of extreme relaxation or euphoria. Hallucinogens are another class that features drugs with no valid medical value. Most of the drugs under this class can cause various side effects like tactile, visual and auditory hallucinations. They have the potential to modify the activity of the brain cells.

Although most of these medicines can be legally proposed by medical specialists, these will become illegal if they are abused or misused. Many people believe that there are other people who usually use someone’s medication to obtain access on these drugs and utilize them for some reasons other than its clinical purpose. It is strongly advised never to take any controlled drugs without proper medical supervision to avoid their debilitating side effects.
