Many of us strive to take care of our bodies and keep our organs as healthy as possible; however, do we take good care of the largest organ in our bodies? Probably not as good as we should take care of it. Is it our heart, liver, pancreas, gall bladder, lungs? Surprisingly, that organ is our skin. You would be interested to know that fish oil may be your skin’s best friend and let me explain why.

Our skin requires moisture and we need fatty acids to keep the moisture from leaking out of our skin and allowing it to dry out. In most of North America, our diets are lacking in omega-3 fatty acids. There are various ways in which our skin can be improved especially by these fatty acids. Lack of these essential fats factor in to such conditions as dry skin, dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, and acne. These conditions are basically caused by inflammation; and fish oil or omega 3 fatty acids fight inflammation. In fact, many health issues arise from inflammation. It is a serious problem and omega 3 fatty acids improve the health and beauty of our skin, by improving cellular health and functioning. They also improve the elasticity of skin thus preventing wrinkles and the signs of aging.

What woman does not want to prevent wrinkles? My wife, for one, is interested in anything that will prevent or improve her skin and the look of wrinkles! Also, skin damaged by exposure to UV rays tends to be dark and wrinkled and that is called photo aging. Taking fish oil as a natural supplement is even better than adding moisturizer topically to your skin. How amazing is that? But that is not the only benefit from this remarkable supplement.

Skin cancer is fast becoming one of the most often diagnosed forms of cancer. This is because of over exposure to UV radiation which occurs when it degrades the immune response by the skin. This, in turn, allows the cancer cells to multiply and become tumors. There is some animal research that indicates that ingesting fish oil can protect against UV radiation. Not only does it protect against UV radiation, it helps rejuvenate the skin. This is especially true when the skin begins aging and becomes thin.

The younger generation is not so interested in wrinkles and aging skin, but their concern is acne. As a teenager I suffered the acne problem like many other teenagers. The good news is that fish oil supplements are a positive way to treat acne. Research has shown that a diet deficient in fatty acids leads to dysfunctions in the system and results in inflammation. Inflammation then leads to acne as well as other skin conditions. Research studies have shown that in places where the diet is high in omega 3 fatty acids people have significantly lower rates of acne. This occurs in places where the most fish and sea food is consumed, especially oily fish such as salmon, sardines, and cod.

Psoriasis can be as troubling as acne as the skin becomes scaly and eventually can build up lesions. This can not only cause pain and itching, but can also be embarrassing to the person suffering with this condition. This condition is also caused by inflammation. Because Eskimos eat a diet that is so high in fatty fish, thus high in omega 3 fatty acids they were studied in tests related to skin conditions. In the case of psoriasis, Eskimos were found to have a very low incidence of this skin condition and the bottom line is it is because of their diet.

It appears that adding omega 3 fatty acids can be most beneficial to almost any skin condition. However, before you add any natural supplement to your diet, be sure and discuss it with your primary health care provider. You need to make sure that it will not interact negatively with any prescribed or over the counter medication you might already be taking.
