When you were a young man, say in your twenties, you could probably eat, and drink, as much as you wanted. It didn’t really matter if you were eating and drinking the wrong things, you would be able to get away with it. If you’re now over 50 then you probably now that’s not the case anymore. If you want to live a long and active life you need to think about exercise and diet

There is no doubt that, along with a healthy diet, getting an appropriate level of exercise is key if you want to prolong your life as much as possible.

In fact, not only will getting the right exercise in your 50′s help you live longer, but it can actually help you to look younger, and feel younger as well.

And the thing is, it’s not too late to get started. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t done any kind of exercise for the better part of the last 50 years. It’s not too late to get started.

The question is, what’s the best exercise to suit you.

Of course that will depend a lot on what you want to achieve, and also what your starting point is.

Doing something is better than doing nothing.

It’s really not necessary to devote all of your free time to exercise and spending every evening and weekend at a health club, in a gym, or with a personal trainer. It can be as simple as making a few basic changes to the way you live that can have a huge impact on how fit and healthy you are.

Do you get a daily paper? Do you drive to go and get it? Why not walk there instead?.

Don’t use the lift, climb the stairs instead.

Do you pay someone to cut your lawn? How about cutting it yourself?.

Do you crash in front of the TV on a Sunday? Why not go for long walk instead?.

All of these tips are of great benefit to improving your health, fitness and well being. they can help you to lose weight, look great, live a longer fuller life.

Of course you don;t need to limit yourself to that.

Maybe you could look at cycling to work instead of driving your car, at least for a couple of days per week?

Could you consider going swimming twice every week? (in my opinion swimming is a fantastic exercise method. Your body is fully supported, there’s nothing to put strain on your muscles, and there’s no impacts to worry about.

Could you find someone to play tennis with each weekend?

Maybe you could run regularly? (a quick note on this one. Invest in some really good running shoes. Running puts a lot of impact strain on various joints and good running shoes will help to cushion those impacts properly)

Of course you could join a gym or health club and use some of their kit.

Treadmills offer you the chance to run without having to brave the elements

Exercise bikes, well sort of like treadmills really, all of the exercise but without getting cold, wet, or run over by the truck that didn’t see you.

One of my favorites is the Cross trainer because it works a lot of different parts of the body and it doesn’t put a lot of impact on your joints or any ther part of your body.

One machine that I consider to be in the ‘advanced’ category is the Rowing Machine. If you are reasy for this then it’s a great way to get a fantastic workout.

That’s without getting onto jit such as stair master and steppers.

Or maybe you want to achieve something other than just losing a bit of weight and improving the health of your heart, circulatory system and lungs.

Maybe you want to build up muscle.

There are many choices, the two main ones are either using free weights, or using machines that apply resistance, either by actually having weights build in or by having some kind of mechanism to simulate weight.

It is often a good idea to start out with the machines, this is even more important if you’re new to training with weights. This is because these machines make sure your body, arms, legs etc are all in the right place to get the maximum benefit. This makes sure that the muscles that you want to be doing the work are. It also means that you are more protected from straining something by using the wrong muscles.

Of course, once you know how to use them properly, the free weights are the best choice for really big effect.

It’s vital that you check that it’s safe to start any exercise routine you might be planning. this is true however old you are. This becomes even more critical as you age. If you have any doubts about your health, or if you’re planning to start intensive exercising then it is critical that you get checked out first by a doctor. Actually it’s highly advisable for whatever you’re planning on.
