When you think of using natural herbs for panic attacks, you may picture trekking into the woods to visit an old woman with a long hair on her chin who will hand you a mixture of herbs in a piece of cloth and send you on your way. Herbs have come a long way, Baby!

Skullcap

Unfortunately, there is some question about the safety of Kava Kava. It has been linked to several cases of liver problems. This herb has been banned in some countries because of possible liver complications.

Valerian Root

While Valerian Root is one of the more commonly used natural herbs for panic attacks, it is important to note that it should only be used for a few months at a time.

St. John’s Wort

St. John’s Wort is believed to decrease the nervousness and anxiety that can bring on panic attacks. St. John’s Wort works by increasing Serotonin levels. As with several other natural herbs for panic attacks, St. John’s Wort is not without some serious concerns. St. John’s Wort should never be taken with prescription antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications. St. John’s Wort also poses a risk of increased bleeding.

Lemon Balm

The name makes you think of soothing chapped lips, but, in reality, Lemon Balm is used to soothe frayed nerves. Lemon Balm is another of the natural herbs for panic attacks that acts as a mild sedative. It is also believed to ease palpitations, insomnia, and other symptoms that can accompany panic attacks.

Motherwort

Studies concerning the effectiveness of Motherwort as a natural herb for panic attacks are inconclusive. Many people believe Motherwort calms the central nervous system, which may lessen panic attacks. Motherwort has been used since the Ancient Roman times. Be warned that there is a risk of increased bleeding associated with the use of Motherwort.
