Rethink Milk When It Comes To Acne

Unfortunately, that glass of milk you have every morning with breakfast may not be doing your skin any good. It turns out that milk is notorious for causing acne outbreaks. Some of the primary root causes of acne are chronic inflammation and blood sugar metabolism. When your blood sugar levels fluctuate all the time, your hormones respond by increasing sebum production. When you drink milk, similar hormone reactions occur. It can also lead to an increase in inflammation. And when inflammation becomes a chronic problem, your immune system is compromised and bacteria now have a chance to come in and block your pores which causes acne.

One of the biggest problems with milk these days is that it usually comes from pregnant cows that have an excess in hormones–the same hormones that cause skin cells to produce more sebum. Aside from that, most milk has a variety of growth hormones including IGF-1 which is the real problem for acne sufferers. It causes more sebum to be produced and it stimulates new skin cell growth. Unfortunately, your skin cells will die just as quickly as they grow. All these dead skin cells block your pores.

Insulin is another milk/acne connection. When insulin levels are high, so is the rate of your acne. Insulin causes more production of sebum and is also related to IGF-1 levels and several other sex hormones which are all linked to acne.

Inflammation from drinking milk is another issue as it turns your clogged pores into pimples. Your body’s response to a harmful substance like viruses, bacteria or chemicals is inflammation. The problem is that most of the milk you buy has herbicides, pesticides, antibiotics, bacteria and other harmful substances that your body tries to protect you from. So as your body is fighting off these invaders, acne results. Allergies can also cause inflammation and with whey and casein protein as the two main allergens in milk, some people find their bodies reacting negatively to them in the way of acne.

So should you give up milk completely? If you are a serious acne sufferer, you are better off finding milk alternatives that do not have the extra hormones and chemicals found in most commercial milk. Another option is to consume raw or organic milk which is less harmful and has less bacteria and hormones, but there is no guarantee that you will not have any reaction–it just may be less severe. But with so many other milk options, you are bound to find something that tastes just as great minus the acne side effects.
