Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor and treats several disorders of the esophagus, stomach and intestines. It works by blocking stomach acid secretion, thereby preventing acid reflux, and allowing esophagal damage and ulcers to heal. It is available as both capsules and tablets in various strengths of 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg.

Omeprazole 20 mg: Omeprazole 20 mg is available both by prescription and over-the-counter. It is the most common dose for the medication.

Omeprazole 20 mg medical uses: Omeprazole 20 mg dosage is used to treat medical conditions that are usually caused due to excess stomach acid, such as heartburn, ulcers, and GERD.

Gastric ulcers: For treatment of gastric ulcers, Omeprazole 20 mg is taken once daily, for an initial course of around 4 weeks. It the conditions is unresponsive to the initial course, it is continued to another 4 week period.

Duodenal ulcers: Omeprazole 20 mg is used once a day for treating duodenal ulcers, for a period of 2 weeks. If the condition is unresponsive, the treatment may further be extended to another 2 weeks.

Peptic ulcer due to H.Pylori: For treatment of peptic ulcers caused by H.Pylori, Omeprazole 20 mg is prescribed along with antibiotics, based on patient’s drug tolerance.

Gastric and Duodenal ulcers caused by NSAIDS: Omeprazole 20 mg once daily is prescribed to treat NSAID induced gastric and duodenal ulcers for a period of 4 weeks. In patients, who did not heal fully within this treatment period, the drug is extended further for a period of another 4 weeks.

GERD: Omeprazole 20 mg once daily for a period of 4 weeks is recommended to treat symptoms of GERD.

Instructions: Omeprazole 20 mg should be taken as prescribed by the physician. Missed dose should be taken as soon as possible. In any case, Omeprazole dose should not be altered without the knowledge of the physician.

Side Effects: Omeprazole 20 mg side effects include upper gastro intestinal disturbances such as: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, flatulence, bloatedness and constipation. It may also cause frequent headaches. Less frequent Omeprazole side effects include: dryness of the mouthperipheral oedemadizziness, sleep disturbances, and excessive tirednessparaesthesia, rash and itching. Some side effects which occur more rarely include:disturbances in taste, hepatitis, stomatitis and jaundicefever, depression, visual disturbances, sweating and photosensitivityalopecia (loss of hair), hallucinations, confusion.

Overdose due to Omeprazole is potentially fatal. Symptoms of Omeprazole overdose include rapid heartbeat, blurred vision, feeling of drowsiness, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and sweating. Any symptoms of drug overdose should be reported to the health care provider.
