When most people search for a doctor they get a list from an insurance company, a suggestion from a friend, or just pick the one who is at the top of their internet search. This lack luster commitment to finding a doctor has led to a number of Americans being uncomfortable or unhappy with their experience at the doctor’s office. Visiting a doctor is a very personal experience. You are sharing some of the most intimate details of your life with this person and in many cases your life truly is in their hands. For these and many other reasons, the search for the right doctor may take some effort, but if you put in the time, you could end up with a lifelong relationship with a medical professional you trust. These tips will help you in your search for the perfect doctor for you.

First, where do you even begin? There are several ways people look for doctors. If you rely on insurance to cover your medical expenses, your insurance company probably has a list of doctors you will have to choose from. If you are taking a more independent approach to healthcare, groups like the American Academy of Private Physicians offer assistance to people looking for doctors who run private or concierge style offices.

Some people choose their doctors based on advice from friends, this can often work out, but remember, just because your friend likes a doctor does not mean they will be right for you, so do not feel bad if you decide to choose someone else, it is your health care.
That brings me to the second tip. Do not wait until you have a major problem to find a doctor. It is ok to try out a few doctors until you find one you like. Make an appointment for a minor test or other basic health check. Think of it as a first date. Do not be afraid to ask questions and if things do not work out, move on to someone else. Save the major checkups, and other more intimate procedures for after you get to know each other better.

If the first checkup goes well and you think you may have found a good doctor that fits your needs, internet research could provide you with valuable information that could help you make up your mind one way or the other. Double check their certification. You may also find information about awards they have won, or even articles they have published that will give you an idea of their ideas as a physician.

Your trip to the doctor’s office will not only be affected by the doctor but also their staff. The reality is, you will probably spend more time interacting with receptionists, billing professionals, and nurses, than you will with the doctor. If you feel tension from an unfriendly person at the desk that could create anxiety for you every time you need to make an appointment or ask something of your doctor. Make sure you consider the entire office when making your decision.
